Heritage Education
ongoing until end of 2024
Encountering cultural heritage
As important contemporary witnesses of political, economic, social or architectural epochs, monuments characterise our landscape, towns and settlements in a unique way. They characterise the cultural identity of a place, a region or a country and therefore also us. One of the main tasks of heritage education is to make the history of material legacies visible and tangible and to communicate this history.
Fountain history(ies) of the city of Lucerne
Water supply is a core social responsibility and fulfils a basic human need. However, water and the importance of this vital resource seem to have almost become a matter of course in Switzerland today. It is therefore all the more important to make this topic more visible and tangible again in its continuity and from different perspectives.
Schools take on the important task of communicating this topic to primary school students. The Kantonale Denkmalpflege Luzern (Lucerne Cantonal Monument Preservation Office) and the University of Teacher Education Lucerne are planning an educational project on how the history of water supply can be communicated in a contemporary and sustainable way using the example of fountains in the city of Lucerne. On the one hand, the educational project aims to show pupils in the 3rd cycle that fountains were and are not just functional structures or temporary prestige objects, but monuments and memorials to historical and political events, artistic achievements and social and technical accomplishments. Communicating the history of fountains in the city of Lucerne thus makes a valuable contribution to historical education and the development of identities.
